Car Hire

Over the many years that we have been visiting the island we have tried out numerous car hire companies. We tend not to tie ourselves to a single company as we seek to get the best deal at the particular time of year for the size of car we need. We might need a car for one person or a large people carrier and all companies offer different deals at different times. We also go for companies that don't make us feel that we are doing them a favour and are obsessive over every little scratch or those that try and sell us essential extras that we thought were included in the price quoted. Hertz and Avis fall into this category from our experience though their cars tend to be absolutely pristene.

We currently favour Pluscar and Autoreisen. The former meets and greets as you emerge from arrivals and takes you a booth shared with other hire companies in the car park whilst the latter has an office at the airport where you queue (best to get in the queue whilst waiting for your bags!). Both arrangments work well. Also you don't have to pay these two in advance from the UK. They accept credit cards when you pick them up and the paperwork required is really quick. There is full Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) Excess included so they are not interested in checking every scratch at the start or hand back, saving you time and worry. Check this is still the case before you take the car away. The cars are fine though not to the Hertz or Avis standard. You takes your choice.

Worth bearing in mind that if you use Holidayautos in the UK you are currently most likely to get a Hertz or possibly an Avis car but you can't check this in advance. Once booked you find this out on the email confirmation that comes through. If you have a collision or in any way damage the vehicle they will expect you to pay the excess when you return the car (debited from your card) and then you have to claim it back from Holidayautos. This can cause much upset and it's not properly explained when you book on line. Claiming you had payed for full CDWE just doesn't cut it with them at the airport...they have heard it all before!

Guests who would prefer not to hire a car for the duration of their holiday will need to arrange transport from the airport to the villa. There are a couple of companies that offer a minibus or a private taxi transfer.
